Cypress Mews – 4 units

This compact building is comprised of four dwelling units within a traditional form that compliments the neighbourhood context. The building is designed to appear as a single family home with the various entrances to each of the four units discretely placed.

Two side-by-side garden level dwelling units make up the lower level plan. Each unit has one bedroom and a den with a connected space concept for the kitchen, dining and living room. The garden level units also have large front sunken patios that act as the entry but also as outdoor living space using a portion of the front yard. There is also a common sunken patio at the rear of the garden level units with access to two large storage rooms. Each garden level unit has 750sf of living space and 175sf of sunken patio outdoor space.

The main floor and second floor levels offer another two side-by-side, two story dwelling units each with 1650sf of living space and 175sf of outdoor deck space. Each unit has two bedrooms with a shared bathroom on the second floor. A very private and separated master bedroom with ensuite and walkin closet is also incorporated into the second floor plan. The main floor plan flows seamlessly from the front entrance through to the living room, large kitchen, dining and family room right out to the rear deck. The spaces are designed feel spacious and roomy. The design also allows for natural cross ventilation promoting passive heating and cooling of the main floor spaces.

The site is cleverly laid out and allows for a fairly equal distribution of yard space between all units. Direct acces to common spaces and the parking from the lane is easily accessed from all units. This project demonstrates the effectiveness of a simple space plan but yet can create a building form that is a notable addition to the neighbourhood.
