Koo Residence

Three main factors proved to be challenging when designing this house:

– The site is over 200′ long,
– The grade climbs over 20′ from front back,
– Views of the water and the North Shore mountains are best captured from front facade and the higher you go up.

The resulting design intends to capitalize on all these factors to produce a home that is functional and that responds to the site conditions. A one storey laneway house is tucked in the rear of the lot with a large rear yard separating it from the main house. The main house is broken into two segments with the rear segment raised to utilize the extra height as the site climbs toward the rear. The main living spaces are placed on the second floor to capitalize on the views from an everyday usage perspective.

When completed we hope that this house will inspire new development on this underdeveloped industrial water front street.
